A doctor gown and a surgical gown are both types of medical gowns. They both serve different purposes and are designed differently.

  • A surgical gown is a type of protective clothing worn by healthcare professionals during surgical procedures. Surgical gowns are typically made of a nonwoven fabric that is fluid-resistant and may be disposable or reusable. These gowns are meant to keep the wearer safe from coming into contact with bodily fluids, blood, and other hazardous materials that could cause infection.
  • On the other hand, a doctor gown is typically worn by physicians during non-surgical medical procedures or exams. Doctor gowns are typically made from light and breathable fabrics like cotton or polyester. They’re designed to offer comfort and allow the wearer to move freely while carrying out their duties. Depending on the particular style, doctor gowns may have either short or long sleeves, and they may also include a collar or other unique features.

Material Specifications

Surgical gowns are typically made of a nonwoven fabric that is fluid-resistant and may be disposable or reusable. The materials used to make these gowns can vary depending on the manufacturer and the purpose they’re intended for. However, some commonly used materials include:

  1. Polypropylene: It is a synthetic polymer that’s lightweight, durable, and offers excellent resistance against fluids.
  2.  Polyester: This is a synthetic/human-made fabric that’s often used in surgical gowns that can be reused multiple times. It’s popular due to its strength, durability, and ability to endure frequent washing without wearing down.
  3.  Polyethylene-coated polypropylene: This is a type of material that isn’t woven (nonwoven fabric) together but instead is made from a single layer. It’s coated with a layer of polyethylene, which makes it more resistant to fluids that could potentially cause harm.

As for yarn ratios, nonwoven fabrics are typically made using a process called melt-blown technology, where fibers are extruded and then bonded together through heat and pressure without the need for weaving or knitting. Therefore, yarn ratios are not typically used in the production of surgical gowns. Instead, the properties of the nonwoven fabric are determined by the specific manufacturing process and materials used.

The technical yarn composition ratios for doctor’s gowns can vary depending on the specific fabric used, but some common examples include:

  1. 100% cotton: This is a natural fiber that is commonly used in woven fabrics for doctor’s gowns due to its softness, breathability, and ability to be laundered without losing its shape or strength. In terms of yarn composition, this could mean using 100% cotton yarn in the fabric construction.
  2. Cotton-polyester blend: A cotton-polyester blend is a combination of natural cotton and synthetic polyester fibers. The specific amounts of cotton and polyester in the blend can vary, but it’s often used because it offers the best of both worlds. It’s comfortable to wear, durable, and easy to take care of. For example, a common yarn composition ratio for a cotton-polyester blend might be 65% cotton and 35% polyester.

It’s important to note that the specific yarn composition ratios can vary depending on the manufacturer and intended use of the doctor’s gown, and other factors such as weave type and fabric weight can also affect the final properties of the fabric.

PE Coated Fabric

PE coated fabric is a type of material that has been coated with polyethylene, a thermoplastic polymer, to enhance its resistance to fluids, water, and chemicals. The coating process involves laminating a thin layer of PE onto the surface of the fabric.

PE coated fabric is often used in institutional settings to make protective clothing, such as surgical gowns, lab coats, and aprons. It’s also used to manufacture hospital bedding, drapes, and curtains, as well as covers for furniture and medical equipment. PE coated fabric is preferred because it provides a reliable barrier against blood, body fluids, and other hazardous substances. It’s also easy to clean, disinfect, and sterilize, making it ideal for healthcare facilities.

Colors for Surgical Gowns

The most common colors used for surgical gowns are green, blue, and sometimes white. These colors are selected because they contrast well with blood and other fluids, making it easier for medical professionals to spot potential contamination during surgeries.

  1. Green and Blue are especially popular due to their strong contrast with the red color of blood. Additionally, green has a calming effect on the eyes and can help reduce eye strain for surgeons during lengthy procedures.
  2. Although less common, White is used for surgeries where cleanliness is of utmost importance, like in sterile environments.

Gender Sizing Guide for Doctors Gowns

Men’s doctor gowns typically have a more boxy and straight cut, while women’s doctor gowns may be more fitted and contoured to the body. It is important to refer to the manufacturer’s size chart to ensure proper fit and comfort.

It is also worth noting that surgical and doctor gowns may be designed differently depending on their intended use. Different surgical gowns may come with unique features depending on their intended use. For instance, some may have longer sleeves and higher necklines to provide more protection against potential hazards. On the other hand, others may have a looser fit to enable better mobility and increased comfort.

Quality Certifications

The quality certifications required for doctor’s gowns and surgical gowns may vary depending on the country or region, as well as the specific requirements of the medical facility or regulatory agency. However, some of the most commonly recognized quality certifications for medical textiles include:

  1. ISO 9001: This certification ensures that the manufacturer has a quality management system in place that meets international standards.
  2. ISO 13485: This certification is specific to the medical device industry and ensures that the manufacturer has a quality management system in place that meets regulatory requirements.
  3. CE Marking: This indicates that the product meets the requirements of the European Union’s medical device directive.
  4. FDA Clearance: This certification is required in the United States and ensures that the product has been tested and cleared for use in medical applications.
  5. AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) Standards: These standards offer qualitative recommendations, guidelines, advice and suggestions for the creation, production, and application of medical textiles, such as surgical gowns and drapes.
